4Some December

This run we've packed each of our freezers with 24 meals! I bought like $520 of meat for the group!! We had lots of chicken left this time... great for company coming!! Our total each ran 274.27 and that's a high!!

Here's what's cooking!!

Monterrey Chicken

8 Chicken Breast
2 can green chillies
8 oz Monterrey cheese slices
Fajita seasonings

Arrange chicken in baking dish & cover with chillies & Bake 30 minutes at 350°. Then add cheese & bake til bubbly

Cranberry Chicken
Prep: 8 min., Bake: 1 hr.

8 Boneless Chicken
1 (1-ounce) envelope dry onion soup mix
1 (16-ounce) can whole-berry cranberry sauce
1 cup Catalina dressing

Rinse chicken with cold water; pat dry. Place chicken in a single layer in a lightly greased 13- x 9-inch baking dish. Sprinkle soup mix evenly over chicken. Stir cranberry sauce, and spoon over chicken; top evenly with dressing. Cover with aluminum foil.
Bake at 400° for 40 minutes; remove foil, reduce temperature to 350°, and bake for 20 more minutes.

Chicken Sun dried Tomato Chicken - bag

8 chicken boneless skinless
1 c Good Seasons Sun Dried Tomato Vinaigrette w/ Roasted Red Pepper Dressing
.5 t coarse ground pepper
.5 c Sun dried tomatoes (packed in oil)
.5 Roaster Red Peppers

Cabbage Rolls Unrolled - Bag

2# Ground beef browned (prep)
.5 pkg frozen onions
1 dry onion soup
1 c ckn broth
1 can diced tomatoes
1 can tomato soup
1 can green chillies
1/2c rice
½ cabbage head

1st Layer cabbage & 2nd meat/rice on top.
Bake 350° 1 ½ hours COVERED… stir after first hour

Chili Pork Tenderloin
From Caroline E 10/04??

2T Chili Powder
1T Sugar
2t Salt
1/2t Onion Powder
1/4t Cumin
1/4t Cayenne
1/4t Garlic


Grill 20min or
Bake @ 350º for 45min – 1hr
til 155º

Greek Chicken

Ingredients
8 Chicken breasts
1 cup olive oil
3 t garlic
2 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary
2 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme
2 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano
4 T lemon juice

Grill oil the grill grate. Place chicken on the grill, discard the marinade.
Cook chicken pieces up to 15 minutes per side, until juices run clear.
or
400 degrees about 45 to 50 min. Option Add potatoes

1 more month 2 go...

Ok I have missed the past couple of months on my reminder and I have now had several of you tell me that I was a bad boy and needed to get with it. So here it is... whispering only one more month! :)

As I pondered what I would write with only one more month to go I guess I am at a loss for words (yeah right)... actually it seems that I am often at a loss for time rather than a loss for words so let me just say at the beginning of this little note that I have no idea how long it will turn out to be so be prepared to scroll down and find a simple well wish for the Thanksgiving holiday or by the same token it might be a really long one too. If anyone sees or finds a method for me to speak into my computer and it writing it down rather than me typing it, my monthly letter would be much easier to write each month. Actually my typing skills are not bad but by the end of a long letter I can feel my age in my wrists, I am sure I am slouching incorrectly when I type but I am a long way from Mrs. Schnitzels high school typing class and I don't remember what she said...

Since I last wrote I have been to; Springerville, Arizona; Colstrip, Montana; Schroeder, Minnesota and had swine flu with the rest of my family. The swine flu was not as bad as all the hype that you see on the news, if you get it just plan a couple of days off of work because you don't feel really good and get a bunch of Little House on the Prairie videos that you watched when you were a little kid.

Does anyone have a good method of avoiding so many repairs on cars, besides buying a new one and having a car payment?

I was pondering the other day and I was going through some old memories they were flashing through my mind actually... have you ever been in a life threatening situation and another situation flashes through your mind, kind of like your life flashing before you but one scene at a time? The situation I was in was occurring as I was driving down an old two lane country road, not too small because it did have a double yellow line painted on it... Anyway I looked up and there was a car barrelling down on me driving down the very center of the road, I was not going to be able to get around them and so what would you do?

That was when a previous situation flashed through my mind... I was driving back from seeing my fiance' like an eternity ago, 1992 or something like that. It was unusual because I would typically leave from Beaumont to head back to school on a Sunday evening but this time was different I stayed over Sunday with her grandparents and left in the morning to make it back to classes. It was a 4 hour drive so I had to leave at like 4am to make a 8am class. I am not saying I was smart back then and if anyone shows this email to either of my kids you'll be sorry, I will egg your house or something.

Anyway it was dark like it often is at 4am and I was just outside of Beaumont coming into a long sloping curve. I looked up and there were two sets of headlights coming right at me. It did not concern me any because we were just coming into the curve, I had driven this route numerous times no big deal. Did I mention that I was also tired, that is not unusual for me to be tired at 4am either. Anyway back to the headlights... as I continued to watch the headlights that were coming at me it finally dawned on me that what I was seeing was not two cars coming into the turn but rather two semi's side by side with one passing the other. The trucks were 50 yards in front of me when I saw them and I had absolutely no time to react... it was a good thing that I did not have time to react because just before we hit, the semi in my lane veered over onto the shoulder and they passed me at 65mph one on each side of me. I continue to thank God that I did not have time to react because if I had reacted and gone to the shoulder myself we would have collided, kind of like a game of chicken but with the odds severely against me surviving. Suffice it to say when it dawned on me just how close I had come to being one of those bugs on the radiator, I pulled over and began hyperventilating (you never have a paper bag when you need it).

Back to the present... what would you have done? I decided to see if I could get their attention so I pulled over into their lane and began swerving like a drunk, boy did they move over quickly and get back where they belonged as they passed they were as far to their side as possible without going into the ditch.

It's always kind of sobering to remember that death may be right around the corner. I have several friends who are very close to death this Thanksgiving season yet they are thankful for their family and friends. They are pleased that they know Christ and continue to tell others about Him even as they are approaching death. Yes we need to have a place to live and food to eat but I hope that is not all we are about, we can't take it with us so maybe I ought to share a bit more and hoard a little less.

Hope you all remember the reason for the season died so that you can live when you die (boy that's an odd sentence). You are going to die so give a little more of it way before you go, I'll try to do the same!

Hey do you have a close call story? I would love to hear about it... have you ever had a bullet whiz by your ear? It might have been a close one but if it missed by an inch or a mile now you can laugh at it because you are still here so be glad. Some of you military folks may have some stories to tell, don't tell me if it is classified information.

Only one more month to go all ya'll! Wooooooooo Whooooooooo.... I'm singin' Jingle Bells in the shower.

My Favorite Zoo

Maybe we arrive just at feeding time!?? So you know, that's 4p at the Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin, Texas. The animals are active!! And after about 100 miles, our girls are active too!!! The path is mostly shaded and the sidewalks are covered with leaf prints...

The Hippos are a favorite!! They actually came and kissed the window with our visit!!

The otters are always playing in their water... even though they are quite smelly!!

The rhino came out to see us!! We only saw maybe 2 or 3 other families in our visit.. so maybe they noticed us!!??! After our pics he retired out of sight.

Another highlight is their peacocks are all over the zoo!! On our first visit, I thought these birds escaped!!! Not, they wander freely!! We've collected peacock feathers. This November we even saw half grown ones...

If you are ever heading thru Lufkin... take a road stop at the Ellen Trout Zoo!!! It makes a great escape from the car for our girls!! Then it is another 100 miles!!!

We've added a spelling program I'm so impressed with. IEW (Excellence in Writing) has a spelling program called the Phonetic Zoo. It is an audio program. Lovebug studies a word list of 15 words that follow a phonetic rule. She is tested and corrects her mistakes independent of me. When she makes 100 two days back to back she moved into the next word list.


Every 5 weeks we make our own word list. This is our first go and I made an audio recording just like they have done. Here's her first list.... pulled from her writings to daddy in her Daddy Dialogue...

Real Napkins... Green??!

I guess this is green!?! Green has been my daughters favorite color for years but is being replaced by pink, I think!! I do not aim to be green and I'm not opposed to green. I've even been known to hate green as a child. I cannot even wear green without that jaundice look. Yet, when it fits... great... when not... no biggie...

Paper napkins are a privilege. They are not required. They are not green. Weeks ago we actually ran out of paper napkins. Ack! We used paper towels for a space, but I really did not want to use them all. So real napkins?!?

I knew where the real napkins are... they are in a drawer with dish towels. I've owned them with no intent to use them. Now, I appreciate them. We are using real napkins for every meal. The girls set the table beautifully. Each of us has one cloth napkin assigned to our place. After a meal we fold them neatly for the next occasion. Soon with a spill all goes in the washer for another round!!

Now this more of a stewardship decision!! and btw it is definitely green!!!

Hubbie lost 3 days of work... Monday to Wednesday... He was burdened by the projects that needed him. He even tried to work a bit from here. I think he was glad to get back at work. There I think many avoided him like the plague!!

The girls missed 2 full days of school and 1/2 day on Wednesday because mama's voice gave out. I'm thankful yet again we homeschool because we can take the time to recover!!

We were prepared with meals in the freeze thanks to my cooking a few weeks ago. We've kept hydrated with cranberry water.

We're on day 5 and Lovebug does not yet feel good. She yet coughs and sniffles. Even so we are mending!!! The rain today makes a good day to snuggle on the couch with our schooling!!

All in all we've gotten off well. This did not run the long 10 days and we've barely hit 5 days. We've heard a friends son at 17 had a temp of 106°. That's scary!! I'm thankful to our Great Physician Jesus!!

The Flu... What's my temp?

Oh! We've been checking temps for days now... it is officially day 4... I'm glad to be on the other side. We have all had the flu. This is past tense!! The official test was Type A but that's aka swine flu.

Our symptoms included fevers, occasionally up to 100°, body aches, hot/cold flashes, and normal cold runny noses, and a but of running off... tmi!!! We ran fevers Sunday, Monday & Tuesday... and not much more...

Once hubbie was diagnosed w/ tried to all get on Tamiflu. We've taken ClaritinD days, Mucinex nights, tylonol. Girls have also taken tylonol & kids mucinex, along with Rxs.

The flu is know for complications... and we had ours... With tears and writhing, Lovebug had an ear infection.... oh, her pain made us all hurt. We expected to be up all that night in excruciating pain. Oh, praise!! The night nurse called in the beloved Rx of ear drops and sleep was precious. We think she ended up with a double ear infection!! She's on Amoxcillin capsules!! She can swallow the pills now!! Upgrade! She also has a mean cough and got a Rx syrup.

At this point I think I've avoided a sinus infection!! This is HUGE!! I'm eating much different and maybe that's helping!! But that's another post.

We've taking our temps hundreds of times... What do bigger families use???
Here's the 4 methods we've used to take our temps...

First and foremost is my "13 Butterfly" fast digital thermometer. This makes all others slow as Christmas!! We've used covers for it but with taking temps over and over our 2 boxes of covers ran low.

Secondly, we have a temporal scanner. We had little faith in the accuracy of this digital device. We pulled it from the archives and acquired it when the girls were tiny. We did find the Dr. office used this same thing!! It did give a clue of temps...

Thirdly and recommended, we used this new niffty Fever Reader. It is a temperature strip you just hold to the forehead. Cool!! This is my favorite. It is quick easy and everybody can use it. I may have to carry it with me!!! It gives and indicator of fevers...


Finally, we broke out the "Planet Mercury" thermometer according to Ladybug. The traditional mercury in the bulb very slow and very accurate temp taker. The girls thought it was cool. They were even patient waiting on it... you can tell they were better by this time!!

Today I think we are all past fevers. Hubbie is back at work. I pray he does not labor too hard! The girls and I are back at school and thinking of Saturday school to stay on track. Lovebug voted more for night school. We'll keep it low key till coughs are waning. I think we'll easily be out this weekend.

The best upside is no Flu Shot!!! We'll not need it now!!! We did hear that many who had the shot are yet coming down with the flu. We hope you don't!! We can say we've not exposed you!!!

From my hammock.. our poor tent...

I'm in my hammock Looking out on a sparkling Lake O'the Pines. This weekend is the pefect for camping. We r camping on the spur of a beautiful morn.
There r only a handful of Tenters with us and no one in our circle. We've biked the park without traffic. Fun.

We prepared in merely 2.5 hrs. We arrived n the dark even so set up n dinner over the fire went very well.

Last night a first.... The girls turned to each other "are you ready for bed yet?" soon they agreed and off they went. They even shared an air mattress. Amazing. I guess they we tired. It was 11:55!

We've listened to & watched a blue heron.

Maple stole bread and later meat n cheese to complete her lunch. Lovebug was not laughing with us after being told she was too close to Maple.

Lovebug and I headed home on the first sprinkles after a few chapters of Little House on the Prairie.

Where did this rain come from??? And when will it stop.

Hubbie and the little one bedded down... to awaken near midnight with water collecting on the tent.

Evacuated. We've left the tent in the rain... and hubbie & Ladybug got home about 1:30.

Today we must got get our poor wet tent. With what looked like 200# of water one of the poles has buckled... Oh, poor tent... now we're challenged to get it ready to camp again this month.

How do you dry a tent??!?? Oh, where's the lovely sunshine??

Just a Battery, Thankful

I'm thankful.

I'm thankful I was at Hometown Hardware when my car died today. The guys there are heroes... and assisted me by cleaning the battery terminals... and persisting until my car started... in the heat of the evening sun...

I'm thankful I was not.. in Shreveport... taking care of my auto registration... or at the library... or at the car wash... all of the places I've been today....

God put me just where a couple gents could help. God is good.

I feel weak and weary. I'm frustrated and aggravated. I'm tired.
Yet, I want to choose to be thankful! I am thankful!!!

Too Early

I must say 4 a.m. is a good time to see stars!! We saw Orion's belt!! But it is definitely a zap to the day!!

We headed toward the sunrise and even had to wait for Cracker Barrel to open!!! I've never done that before!!

All are tired! Lovebug & I rested arriving home at 8:30!! Ladybug has been holding out... she may yet fall out this afternoon!!

We've schooled in the midst. Yet somehow it is very difficult to learn to read on days like these!! Studying animals and reading Robinson Crusoe have been much more enjoyed!!

We bought chicken by the case from Sams!! 4 cases at 1.79#... That's like 300 chicken breasts!! Wow!!


Two newbies joined us this round. It's been months since we cooked last... January. Kim & Kara did great! They were fast & completed their meals keeping up with Angela & I!


Here's a run down of our cook!! Our goal is to prepare and bag the meals... to be thawed and cooked!!

Maw-Maw’s Chicken Pie – bag 5x FBC

Beef Pot Roast au Jus (crock) for Sandwiches – Bag

Maw-Maw’s Chicken Pie - bag

3 c Chicken **chopped cooked
1 c mixed frozen veg
1 soup cream chicken
1.5 c Chicken Broth
2T Cornstarch
1.5 c self-rising flour
1 c buttermilk
.5 c butter melted

Mix chicken, broth, soup, cornstarch
Whisk flour, buttermilk, melted butter & spoon evenly over chicken mixture.
Bake 400° for 40 minutes or until crust is golden brown.

Monterrey Chicken

8 Chicken Breast
2 can green chillies
8 oz Monterrey cheese slices
Fajita seasonings

Arrange chicken in baking dish & cover with chillies & Bake 30 minutes at 350°. Then add cheese & bake til bubbly

Sunshine Chicken

8 Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast
.5c Mustard
.5 c Pineapple Juice
2 T Brown Sugar

Grill 10-20 minutes turning frequently & basting with sauce

Onion Burgers

2# Ground Beef
1 Onion Soup Mix
½ c Water
Wax paper or Foil

Grill & Add Hamburger buns, lettuce, tomato, cheese! Grill veggies too!!



Beef Pot Roast au Jus crock for Sandwiches1 to 1½ cups beef broth¼ cup red wine 1/8 tsp salt ½ tsp ground black pepper ½ tsp dried oregano ½ tsp dried basil ½ tsp dried parsley ½ tsp garlic powder 1 bay leaf 1 onion, sliced1 clove garlic, chopped1 (7 oz) pkg dry Italian-style salad dressing mix 2 lbs rump roast
Place roast in slow cooker. Cover, and cook on Low for 10 to 12 hours, or on High for 4 to 5 hours. When done, remove bay leaf, and shred meat with a fork or cut into thin slices. Return shredded/sliced meat to the sauce and simmer for 1 hour.Serve over mashed potatoes or on toasted crusty rolls, topped with sauteed mushrooms and onions, provolone or mozzarella cheese, roasted sweet peppers or hot peppers.

Cajun Chops

2 T paprika
2t season salt
2t rubbed sage
1t cayenne pepper
1t black pepper
1t garlic powder
8 (1/2” thick) boneless pork chops
4T butter

Combine seasonings & cover chops.
Heat butter just until starts to brown
Reduce heat to med & fry both sides til dark, 8-10 min
Cook to 160 degree

Count to 72

That's 72 Carbs?! What is a carb anyway?

We've eliminated Sonic and happy hour is no longer an option.

We're determined to change the way we eat. Our plan is to loose some weight and make some new habits.

We count all carbs... bread n sweetness.... we even watch or avoid the corn n potatoes....

4th Grade n 2nd

Let's start school!!!


The girls pushed us to starting a week early!!! Now we are 3 weeks into the school year and over due on a post.


4th Grade!

This year is a jump! We are into real plays with Shakespeare. Plutarch lives will be part of our world. Latin and Spanish both have a part to play.


Shakespeare! 12 weeks in the term to study a single play. I've already blogged that plan!! A04 Shakespeare


Plutarch was a Greek historian writing in the 1st century... We have some great study guides in AO!!!


Spelling! We are into the Phonetic Zoo with IEW. The independence with this program is amazing. Lovebug studies the words and learns the associated rule. The program is all audio. She listens and has a spelling test. The in audio as well they give correct spelling so that she can self check. Wow!!! We are on week 2 the rule I before E except after C is her challenge point right now...

Late for a College Fund... Utah?!

Girs grow quick! Yikes 9 & 7!!!
Even so, we may have a late start but we'll at least make a start!!

College Funds!

Here's my rambling as we research and make a path... while I agree it builds character for the child to save on their own... I do want a strong encouragement to head to college... and a fund in place may hold sway...

ESA or a 529?
An ESA is owned by the child. A 529 is owned by the adult and designated to the child... Dave Ramsey recommends the ESA... while the ELP has said go w/ a 529.

Which 529? There is a plethora of options... too many to even count... in state, out of state, that has left me spinning without clear direction.

I've finally found heads up and determined our look into this arena.

My first resource is the College info Sound Mind Investing... they have been a great resource in the financial waters... I've a membership with 'em and think this is in their public pages!!! (As a member if you join them reference me!!)

Next I looked over Morningstar.com The Best and Worst 529 College Savings Plans
I thought this was a good analysis between 529 plans. I made notes of the best and worst plans.

I compared that list on the ratings at SavingforCollege.com Here's there Top 10 Performing Plans 10.

Finally, that takes us to Utah. Their plan is in the top on both the Morningstar and #3 in the 5 year outlook with SavingforCollege. So I'm confident in our direction. Since Texas has no state income tax the instate appeal is lacking.

All in all I'm hearing a consistent perspective on education that has bent my scope. The specific college does not hold sway... the education is what matters.. not where is takes place... and the higher the cost does not increase the value of the education...

I pray God to lead and guide my girls... and pray we are wise stewards encouraging their future education!! All the while I'm covered up in their current education!! Grace! ss

Memom's Dijon Dressing

Tonight we ate all our salad!! That is highly unusual!!!

Memom's Dijon Dressing

1/2 c Olive Oil
1/8 c Red Wine Vinegar
1/4 t Oregano
Salt & Pepper
Garlic
1 t Dijon Mustard

Blend & the Dijon really combines the dressing!! Dress the salad & serve!! I've made it just as I've made the salad. I've also used other vinegars for fun...

I'm yet in the organic coop! Only now I've going for 1/2 price... and splitting the goods!

Wow... Shazam... Only 3 more months and 21 days til Christmas

This past month cruised by... did I tell you it cruised by?

I got home from a business trip late Wednesday and I realized that I have missed the 4 month countdown dooflachee that I typically send out to all those who I like to keep up dated.

Last night one of my daughters came in and looked at me and said "Dad, you are getting a lot of grey hairs!" I told her that is what happens when you get older. She said she does not want me to get older. I told her I did not think I could stop it without other undesireable results. All that said... Shazam... this month disappeared FAST and I am getting older much quicker than I used to! Some of you on here probably have no clue where "Shazam" came from so you will have to look it up.

I have spent a lot of time on the road this month traveling over to one of our power plants near Waco doing training and start-up testing so not being home has been tough. On this last trip my company rented me a full size F150 truck (2009) and it has been great. Last Friday night I got back about 6:30pm and when we were done eating I told Stephanie to load up the girls we were heading up to Lake Bob Sandlin and we were going to lay in the back of the truck and watch the stars until we fell asleep.
We loaded up blankets, a great big rug to lay on, pillows, water, fresh baked cookies, popsicles, and headed out. We got to Lake Bob Sandlin around 9:00pm and we all hopped in the back of the truck and watched the stars. It just happend to be a new moon so there was no moon, the sky was clear as the ocean in the Bahamas and we could see Jazillions of stars, including the milky way. We lay there for two hours and we saw multiple shooting stars each and they had super duper long tails... it was COOL! We didn't fall asleep there but we got back home around 12:30am and had a bunch of fun.

Don't forget that Jesus made all those stars and his birthday is like almost here.

Save me some red M&M's.

A New Co-op... Fruits & Veggies

OOOoooooo I'm in another Co-op!! This is our all new area Organic Fruits & Veggies Co-op. They company is out of Dallas... Your Health Source...

Here's the list: 2 romaine lettuce, 4 corn on cob, potatoes, 3 onions, 3 peaches, 3 nectarines, 4 plums, 2 mango, 6 zucchini, 7 yellow squash, 2 garlic, 3 cucumbers, and a bag of green beans!!!

I'm thrilled with the variety. I better use it all! I'm not sure it is a fit since it has blown our budget!! Yikes!! The box ran $50!! The co-op runs every other week!! And I've signed up for next week and we'll see how well this goes...

I'm still in the fresh milk coop and every week I'm making yogurt!!

Does it sound too expensive to you??? hmmm... pondering & calculating...

5 more months...

Ok here is the monthly reminder that time is growing short. No I did not forget on Saturday that I needed to send this out... I just decided it would need to be after the weekend since things were running crazy.

This month has been a great month... it all started with L's birthday on the 3rd, then the 4th of July and off to the beach for a week's vacation. I am not going to make this one long to make up for the extra minutes that you burned last month reading my novel.

For the 3rd we went to see the grandparents in Beaumont for L's birthday (see attached photo).

Then we went to the beach for a week you can see our beach "cabin" (attached) and threw in a day at the Schliterbaun for good measure. The day at the Schliterbaun was the most eventful as L and I got separated and that was not a pretty scene. Then that night we went to the beach area in Galveston and ate at Fishtales (where we normally eat). L told me that she was not paying attention when she stepped off the top flight of stairs and tumbled head over heels down one flight of stairs. We ended up in the ER in Galveston, it is still tore up from the hurricane but it is still pretty top rated. She was complaining that her back hurt and she was not walking very well. When we got to the ER she needed a bathroom and since I could not go in there she walked in without too much trouble so we left without seeing anyone... she was fine by the time we got to the ferry.

My brother-in-law and I went fishing the next evening and night. You can see his catch, (Eric by himself), and my catch, (both of us attached too). We caught lots of crabs too. We caught them right where everyone was swimming, nice huh?

Here's to hoping for a nice time tomorrow at Six Flags over Texas...

I have taken a bunch of time off this month and it has been great.

Don't forget that Jesus said we are to be fishers of men... and His birthday is coming up!

AO4 Shakespeare

School is officially out for the summer!!! I have immediately delved into the coming year with schedules and plans for the fall.

Today Ladybug declared to Daddy "I want to school but Mama doesn't let me!" WHAT?!!! This is the girls who merely days ago finished 1st grade!!! I love it!

Today I am trying to chart our Shakespeare study. Now we've studied Shakespeare for years now, yet this is the first time we will be studying the real in all the old English plays in AO4. How do you study such a creature!?

Generally you read first and watch a movie after. This has been a hard fast rule. Shakespeare is the exception. Now we are looking for approved movies to watch before we head into the plays!! The AO site links a list of movies...

Second we will read Lamb's...Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare is a book Lovebug has read before as we studied plays. Now it will be her into to the real thing.

Extra we will look at a fun book... (at this very moment my girls have swiped my book!!! I'm glad they are eager!!! Yet these books are off limits for now!!!) Williams' Tales from Shakespeare is a cartoon cartoon version of six plays. (She was reading Hamlet!) Another option is the illustrated plays by Bruce Coville.

Third, finally we'll hit the true plays. Right now I'm looking for audio unedited versions of the plays. I've started with Librivox. They have our term 1 play, A Midsummer Night's Dream and I've downloaded it. The other plays for the year are in their work in process. Maybe they will finish before we jump into the real plays.

Forth I understand it is helpful to act out the play!! Where are my other AOers?? We are going to need our own Shakespeare troupe!!! Any takers??? Even if you are not an AOer... want to work on a play??

That sounds to be a far stretch. Time will tell an we'll see how Shakespeare goes. This is my first punt at the playing field. We'll yet see if it is caught!!

btw blogging just has not happened!! Birthdays Beach, Anniversary, Plays have yet to hit the blog! Hummmm life goes on!! To catch up... or just get back in stride?? Alas, I know not!

A Lovely Birthday

Yesterday was wonderful!! The best birthday!!!

I shared the best breakfast with Hubbie. We then packed a lunch and headed with the girls to Daingerfield State Park to hit their bike trails.

What a ride!!! We hit the easy loop to start! We lerned to avoid the sand bogs. Then we hit the A Trail.

We started down hill... that was fun and fast. As we had to head back up Ladybug was ready to tun back. She was done!

With a big rest off the path, we started again with a big dose of encouragement. "You can do it." "Walk if you need too." "I can do all things thru Him who gives me strength." "To go back the way we've come is all up hill." "You're doing good." "We're almost to the top of the hill." It was hard!

You can see Ladybugs face all flushed. We were all hot and downing the water.

We completed the trail and we were glad to get in the car for the A/C!!! We drove around the park and headed home. We'd thought to stay the day but the heat drove us home.

I'm so ready to go back!! My bike's tires are slashed from the rocks on the path and it has flats too. That's a bit of recover but I hope to go back soon!!! Maybe the girls will swim.

Once home we cleaned up to get out for dinner. We enjoyed Texas Roadhouse!! A treat for sure!!!

It was a best birthday ever!!! Filled with family and fun!!! The Facebook notes were great too!!!

Phone Squelch

Yesterday I bought 2 of the LG600 Tracfone. Today I returned them both. After they said NO to the return... they did take them back! Thankfully!

After calling to cancel Sprint, we've worked out a psudo plan. Alas, my phone & Hubbies have been totally squelched. All we can do now is call... and text. I'd wanted and iPhone! Ha! "I'm cutting bills!!!"

I cannot count the times I've tried to use the phone to catch up on email... or read the news. Now with a blocker on the phone there's no service... and no extra charges. "I'm cutting bills!"

So, bottom line I've cut my Sprint bill from $110 to something like $30.
We have 350 minutes... no roam... Sprint calls free, and any 5 #s free... and 100 text. That may be a test... without the accessories I'm finding using the texting more... "Yet cutting bills!"

As long as my phone works... today I'm with Sprint. I'll not commit to any years so there's no breaks in phone prices. In the store they actually told me to hit ebay!!! Hummm.... Anybody have an good used phone???

In 2007, I think, we actually camped at Palistine's Railraod Park to catch the blueberries. We all enjoyed the pancakes!! Yumm....

A new kid...

We have a new kid on the block...

She and Maple are not getting along well... Maple want to herd her and runs endless circles around the kid.

The girls are thrilled! Hubbies made a table for the kid to climb on! They were all eager to have her here. Hope the neighbors feel the same!!

We are borrowing the goat for a month... if we can keep her contained that long. For now she's in a harness and tethered. That required a new tether to keep Maple from herding.

We have bleating at night and she woke the fam this morning before 7a. She quiets when the girls are out to play.

She's a sweet blue eyed kid... baaaabaaaa...

Shattered the Grill

Bummer! Drats!

Instead of grilled chicken... 2 kinds for dinner.... I've managed to destroy the grill as the glass shattered destroying both the grill and dinner.

The girls heard the glass burst as the grill was aflame. I lost a shoe running to turn off the gas and now shoeless with a blistered foot. I'm glad the girls were not near the glass nor Maple as the girls had her on the leash.

I hope the milk is good... It must be a cereal night....

Hmmm. Father's Day approaches. How does that fit in the budget!!!

Alas, there's too much to blog today!!!

The 10 Year Plan

We'll is it official... we are hooked on a new financial plan. Thru the years we've tried to go no debt.. the minivan & A/C system busted that.... we've tried to follow the teaching of the Bible... Larry Burket and Austin Prior... and other Godly teachers.

Only now have we started heading in the direction to pay debts and save.

Here's what's changed our direction:

• Spend EVERY dollar before the month begins
• Absolutely no credit
• Now we're looking at 10 years to be free & clear.

I've listened to the CDs. Then I bought the books and read them.... The Total Money Makeover, Financial Peace Revisited, and I'm listening to the podcast of Dave Ramsey.

We started this journey in March thanks to our Small Group with FBC. Relunctly, I spent the money for the materials for the study. I had the hope that maybe this would get Hubbie and I on the same page. He'd been frustrated for quite some time. I'd only kept the checkbook yearly or so. I'd decided my time with homeschooling did not give me time to account for us. Our quicken program needed an upgrade and I'd refused to do the quicken thing. We'd done quicken since 1993 and it had not helped yet!!!

It has totally changed our direction!! Now we've been spending every dollar before the month since March.

This week we've had the break thru. I've been running numbers like crazy...

EVERY available dollar to an Emergency Fund of 3-6 months of expenses. That's till sometime next year.
Then we're debating a car fund. That's till 2011.
Next is the 15% to retirement & college funds for the girls.
Pay off the mortgage.

As I ran those numbers there was just not enough at the end to attack our mortgage.

Refiguring over and over... I've tried to find how can I add about 400 a month... what can I do to help... just $100 a week. The numbers have been running and running in my head. How can we do this!??? The pieces just did not fit.

In the late night hours I found the key.

To pay off the house as well as the retirement & college fund... we have to pay early NOW and not wait till these others are done. Then it will all fit. Praise Praise Praise!!!!
Really, we are treating our 30 year mortgage like a 15 year. This is what puts us on the 10 year plan!!!

10 years to be debt free!!! 120 months or so! I hear the grass feels different then... :)

Only God can bless our plan and make it happen!!! It's all HIS!!! I do feel like we are on a better stewardship plan than we've ever been.

Followup: In review we just cannot make it fit!! Alas, we need a car fund for we cannot drive the house. Soooo we are working on ways to cut expenses like the phone bill to pay off the house!! Snip!

How do you boil water?

Ladybug asked "How will you boil water?"

It as a genuine question! Alas, my electric kettle has keeled over. The base has a short in it and with all Hubbie's efforts he's been unable to repair it. So we'll need to figure out how to boil water... or get a new electric kettle...

Why boil water?? We're always making Hubbie's pick of peach tea... and my pick of mint tea. Do come over and we'll treat you to an iced glad of tea!!

In the meantime, I'm boiling water on the stove top in a saucer... I don't even have a kettle!!

Gleaning! I like to glean. Sort thru another's lessons and glean the ones for me. Somewhere in this mix is my gleaning.

1. School breaks with exercise, put up shoes, chore, activity


2. Positive incentives to obedience: Noah, Samuel, Esther; cast a vision of obedience and availability to God


3. Recognize & teach the valley of indecision, habit of obedience


4. Practice Obedience, right away & cheerful


5. Handel whine quick, remove eg. food, tone matters


6. Busy is less opportunity for trouble


7. Tithe & Save 10/10 then 50% left for child's house


8. Listen for the rebellion & address at voice inflection


9. Discipline/Affection/Pray


10. Pray for a duration, set a timer 5 min


11. Keep children with you, touching


12. In the valley win the battle: Helen Keller


13. Read the Bible: encourage underlining & journal a comment about the verses


14. Intentional children are the priority, no the phone or computer


15. Relationship over Academics Keep your eye on the goal, don't loose heart

17. Thankfulness is for them: Thankful & Please counter on fridge

This is just a smattering of the lessons that are following me. It was good to write them all down on the ride home. Thanks Kim for the help! They remind me of Jesus' parable of the seeds that fell on the path, rocky soil, shallow, & those in good soil. May some of these find their way to good soil and produce a crop 100x fold.

I really enjoyed Renee Ellison of Homeschool How-To's. Her workshops are always stuffed stem to stern. Hubbie & I also just made it to Tod Weaver of the Familyman. I'm thrilled for Hubbie to get that scope for us in the journey of us homeschooling... He hit a mark with us.

Homeschool Book Fair!!! & Half Price

I so enjoyed this year's Homeschool Book Fair. I even enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Kim- our Friday nearly ran my feet off!!! We did better Saturday. I definitely want to do this again!! Hope you do too!!!

The workshops were the best use of my conference time... that's a whole new post...

Of all this only 2 books up top with the art supplies and 3 books from the stack are from the book fair.

Most of these are from my new favorite book store!! This was my first ever visit to a Half Price bookstore... and I had so much fun!!!

Kim & I enjoyed it so much we found a 2nd one on the way home!! I've since heard I've not hit their big store. I'm eager to go!!!

Todd Weaver of the Family Man was a laugh & a challenge to not give in to lies we believe! Hubbie came just to catch up with Todd... he's the Be d'Dad man...

This was the girls first time to join me! Ladybug found a squashible pig & Lovebug picked an American Girl book. She has a growing interest in everything American Girl.

We stayed at the perfect place!! Remember this: the Sheardton is closer to the conference than their parking lot!!!

This time my system was better! With 3 coupons sets from local papers and a double coupon from a bigger paper, I stack all like sets together. Then I actually clipped all 3 identical pages at one time! Next I immediately filed them in the photo holders.

My big lesson was to only cut what I'll use. My first time I cut EVERYTHING!! That was horrible to file!! This was more manageable. I keep the other stuff in one file to go thru if someone finds a good deal.

Now I'm done!! Next is to save!! All I have to do is clear the coffee table! ... and hope I can find the coupons when I need them!

I do love homeschooling my girls! The days have their challenges... like all our days. I like sharing the highs and lows in these fleeting years. I love learning together because there is so very much to learn.

I'm so very thankful to have my Hubbie's full support. He is doubles my joy and halves my burdens.

This week we've traveled the Great Lakes with Paddle to the Sea, we've seen China with Marco Polo. We've jumped into multiplying 2&5&3&10s as well as adding and subtracting to 10 :) We walked not making a sound to watch a otter. For a first we've site read piano music! Wow! We've watch a nest of Tommy Titmouse birds and listened to the little one chirp. We've watched Robin Redbreast building a nest with the neighbors trailings from a late night wrap. We think we may have seen an American Kestral. We're reading more and more words.

Tomorrow we'll dive right back in!! I'm thankful!! Challenged and thankful!! Grace! ss

Birdhouse Not for Rent

For years our bird house has been spurned by all birds. We'd only found spiders where we wanted a little family!

We are thrilled to have renters!

Tommy Titmouse & Tammi are diligently caring for their brood. We found the little ones chirping on 4/15. Mom and dad have been feeding the often running from the front yard feeders to the back yard nest.

Playing outside today the girls said the birds have gone. Oh, I do hope not yet!! Maple has given the birds and especially hard time barking endless as they come and go. Tommy has played hide and seek leading Maple around and around the tree before he sneaks into the house!

I hope they all escape Maple and we need to keep our watch up! Birding!! Grace! ss

Herb

I'm thrilled with my little herb garden. Each item is marked with a rock from our travels!! How fun!! The girls have picked up rock from all over! Some of these we took the flight with us from Colorado! I have yet to add dill.

Maple has enjoyed my garden as well... she pulled up all my silver leaves for decoration and I think she ate the marigolds. At least she did not eat the herbs but she does like to land in my rosemary!!

9 More months (oops)... Only 8 More months...

Well... I guess I am sending this e-mail out into the black hole of the Internet. I decided to do a test and see how long it would take for someone to remind me that I had forgotten to send out my monthly notice for Christmas. Since no one reminded me I figure I will discontinue it but then after figuring and re-figuring I figured I would not get into a pity party over the fact that I am as busy as the next person and can't stop to send even a two sentence e-mail to all my friends that Christmas is just around the corner.

My daughter's are growing up rapidly and so I thought I would send out a little tribute to their uniqueness (see the attached photos).

M had her second piano recital and then the other night while M was at an activity I took L out for a night on the town with dad doing whatever she wanted. We ended up hitting all the pet stores in town and she wanted a few pictures with some of the animals.

Don't forget to hug your kids... My aunt Shirley passed away this past Friday. She retired in June with big plans for retirement only to discover she had cancer. She fought diligently for five months until she succummed this last week. We will miss her!

Don't forget the reason for the season... He made the sunrises and the sunsets! He knows how many we have remaining to live.

Just an FYI... I am also thankful for plastic spoons and rubber gloves.

Best Kiss Ever Selling Books??

My husband was giving away kisses last night!!! He claimed them the best kiss ever!!!

I had to scold him!!! He did not give me one!!!!

Thanks to Hubbie I'm covered up in smiles from the book sale last night!!! He gave away coconut kisses and made all our books on sale in my absence!!! Ha!! I was so enjoying shopping!! He had many shoppers just look because of his sale!!! I think all the kids enjoyed the kisses most asking if they were really free :)

I found several AO books and sold enough to more than cover what I found. Now I can get some books I've not had funds for. The girls shopped and made friends. Ladybug is carrying around her new chair and Lovebug cannot put down her new book.

Hubbie was SO my hero. We were locked out of the light closet last night and I volunteered him to help. Without a hiccup he headed right out to the church at like 10:30 last night to get the lights out. HUGE THANKS Hubie!!!! You are the best and I'll give you all my kisses!!! You may owe me chocolate!!! :)

Cream Cheese Neimans

I'm on a cream cheese hunt!! It is just a special treat for the girls. We've had a total exam week! We've climbed the mountain and looked back to see where we've been. Here's our sweetness at the peak. Cream Cheese Neimans!!




Cream Cheese Filling

• 1 Cream Cheese 8oz
• 1/2c Sugar
• 1 egg

Mix til smooth



Neiman's Cookie Dough - My recipe dates back to Shelly Kelton in June of 1996!!

• 2 eggs
• 1c butter
• 1c sugar
• 1c brown sugar
• 2c flour
• 2.5c blended oats, mostly I use whole!!
• 1t soda
• 1t salt
• 1t baking powder
• 1t vanilla
• 4 oz grated chocolate, this is rarely on hand
• 12 oz chocolate chips
• 1c nuts

Cream butter & sugars. Combine dry then add to butter. Finally add chocolate nuts. Drop spoon fulls & Bake at 375° for 10 minutes. (Angela... this is for you!!!)

And to make the Cream Cheese Neimans....

1/2 cookie dough on bottom of pan, cover w/ cream cheese, crumble remain dough to cover.

Bake 350° for 35-40 minutes. Cool 30 then Cool in freeze 30. (Or cool in fridge 2 hours.)

They went back to the sea seashore and got some more salt. Then he sat in the water. The man got so angry he drove him back to the seashore. He got some sponges and put them in the baskets. Then the donkey laid down in the water again. He got ten more weights of water in the sponges. The End.

The donkey learned the lesson that he should not lay down in the water with sponges because he’ll way ten weight more.

Story of Inventions by Michael J. Mc Hugh & Frank P. Bachman

Henry Bessmer made steel. It took 3 ½ years to make. He was born in London in 1830. He was a boy. He was a young teenage boy.

John Gutenberg made his very very first Bible. He made the first press too. In Gutenberg’s time the animals cost 25 cents to 5 dollars. A sheep was .25. A cow cost 2 dollars and a horse was $5. He was born in Germany and he lived from 1400 to 1468. During his time the poor had to have block Bibles. There were many books the rich got that have very pretty boarders on the edges for lots and lots of money.

He invented a Bible that had very pretty boarder edges and for some reason his did not cost so much like the rich’s Bible did.

He made little letters that could be pressed onto paper. He tried one mental and it was too soft. It squished. The second metal he tried, iron, and that too was soft and hard. The next time he tried it was lead. It was too too hard and when straight thru the paper. The good thing about it was he did not give up. Like many other people wanted him to.

He lost one of his people. He had three who helped him and one died. Now he had to work with two and was loosing money on his invention.

There was one man who was the money keeper. He gave John some money and had not gotten any back. He was a greedy man. When John Gutenberg finished some of his Bibles, the man saw a great time for his payback. He took all the molds and threw John Gutenberg out. But the church heard he was in trouble. He had helped the church and they called him in. When they heard he had been thrown out they rescued him and gave him their dress, clothing and a place in the church. Soon John Gutenberg got sick and died that year. He was buried at that church. He had invented the first printing press.

Parables from Nature by Margaret Gatty

Gifts

There were some gardens and they were put along a path in the garden. There were many turnips and carrots. The Mr. Carrot complained that he was orange and he wanted to become round. The turnips are round and are purple and white. The carrots have to go down deep in the soil with their point ends with so many roots on them. They get eaten by little children like me. He wanted to be a turnip that is purple and white. He was complaining about that. The turnip started teasing him that he should start trying to get round. The carrot tried to get round. Then the beets whispered to each other of what they heard and when they heard they were talking about starting to get round. Oowwww… Why are they talking about that. Don’t they know they are different from each other. They should be like us and not fight like they always do.

The gardner finally came and pulled the carrot up. He saw the carrot was bumpy in the middle. He was about to throw it away and remembered that the cook was always needed a carrot. So he took it and she chopped him up.

The lesson is to be glad of your own self and not to be greedy of others.

This Country of Ours by H E Marshall

Pocahontas

Pocahontas was a girl and she was an Indian. She saved John Smith from being killed. She married and Englishman and she went to England. Her father was happy she married an Englishman. He made peace for a very long time. His name was Powhatan. When she went to England she saw John Smith. He had to go back to England because some gun powder blew up. When Pocahontas saw John Smith she was very very happy. She said she had believed he was dead. But when she heard that he was not going to call her Pocahontas but Princess in stead, she was very hurt.

She was born in Virginia. She died in 1617.

One Hour

This is my challenge!! 1 Hour!!

I did it today.... One hour to read. I also want to start pulling in Lovebug to read her Bible on her own. I'm not having her reading to me but I want her to read to enjoy God's word on her own!!

• Recovery from Cancer by Elaine Nussabum, I came across this in my health study. Hubbie's Aunt Shirley Hoyer is struggling w/ cancer.

The Cost of Stitches

We have been waiting for the hospital bill and it has come...

The going rate is just under 2k! This was a simple ER visit... there were no tests or additional treatments. They used a topical to deaden for stitches and then a shot to make sure it she would not feel it. That's about $240 per stitch!!!

She did give a very hard time to the PA who gave her the stitches. I did not see an additional cost for that!!! Oh, I'll yet have to track down the detail. I only have one grand number!!

Thankfully we do have insurance. We have been under better insurance.. we've even been double insured... alas now we'll just be thankful for insurance!! I must say we have so used this insurance with all Hubbie's surgeries in '07!! So all in all we had lots to be thankful for!

Here's the low down!!!

Blue Cross adjusted the bill down 38%
Blue Cross paid only 23%
And the final 39% is up to us to cover

I do hope this is the only bill!!! There's both facility and physician charges and we saw no one else!! So!!

I'm so thankful Lovebug is healing!!! Grace ! ss

St. Patrick's Day! Holly Then... Maple 6 months

On this beautiful day we headed out to find our own clover. To think of Patrick explaining the Father, Son & Holy Spirit with the clover. As we walked in the sunshine I thought back two years.... to our last walk with Holly we were on a clover hunt then too... I gently mentioned it to the girls as we rounded that same corner with the fenced dogs barking a fit.

We've been teaching Maple to walk with with us, leash tight. We've watch many of the Ceasar Milan shows. She's is not allowed to bark at other dogs. We shush and quiet her and turn her attention away from them. We're trying to train her to really pay us her attention. Thereby the barkers get no attention. She's doing great!!!

Maple is so growing up! She's now 6 months old. She's lost her puppy appearance. She totally adores the girls. She barely notices me and Hubbie. She'll cry for the girls if they get too far ahead when we walk. She look back countless times if they follow. Maple always want to know where HER girls are!! Maple has been camping and oh, that was eventful!!

In contrast Holly was our dog. She did not have Maple's affection for the girls. Holly came when we called. Maple comes for the girls when they lay down! Here's a last photo of Holly in '07!

That was in 2007 and was first of a hard year. Hubbie wrote it all out in his Roller Coaster Ride.

This is also in sweet memory of Holly!!!
